Bone Grafting in San Diego & Coronado CA

Major & Minor Bone Grafting

Missing teeth over a period of time can cause your jaw bone to atrophy, or resorb. This often results in poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants as well as long-term shifting of remaining teeth and changes to the facial structure.

Most patients, in these situations, are not candidates for dental implants without some grafting to the edentulous area.

Fortunately, today we have the ability to grow bone where it is needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Are You a Candidate for Bone Grafting

Major Bone Grafting

Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, infection,  gum disease, or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or your own bone is taken from the jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee).

Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw. In addition, special membranes may be utilized that dissolve under the gum to protect the bone graft, as well as encourage bone regeneration. This is called guided bone regeneration, guided tissue regeneration or bone morphogenic proteins.

Major bone grafts are typically performed to repair large defects of the jaws. These defects may arise as a result of traumatic injuries, tumor surgery, or congenital defects. Large defects are repaired using the patient’s own bone.

This bone is harvested from a number of different areas depending on the size needed. The skull (cranium), hip (iliac crest), and lateral knee (tibia), are common donor sites. These procedures are routinely performed as a same day surgery in a hospital operating room.

Patient Review By Krista P

I’m very dental-procedure anxious. I needed 4 extractions and 2 bone grafts. I was super nervous about my appointment… but the staff and Dr Hummeldorf quickly got to work. I woke up about an hour later and was all done. I expected pain and was prepared to take the pain medicine. However i experienced no pain, no swelling, no bruising, just a little bleeding. The days after were completely pain free too. (I know, i was surprised too!) I would give that experience a 10/10. (The suture removal, 3 weeks later) was very fast and hurt a tiny bit for a few mins). Overall this was my best dental experience I’ve had. I’m so thankful for Dr. H and his team for helping me through it all.

But Doctor is a fortunate exception. He is a talented and experienced doctor and a true specialist in his field! No less importantly, he truly does all in his power to help his patients. He is superbly attentive and caring. I am profoundly grateful for his care and for figuring out a course of treatment that made sense in light of my medical condition and personal circumstances. Thank you! Irina Dorfman
