What Is An Impacted Tooth?

Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

Types Of Impactions

We will need to see you for a consultation to determine if you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal. A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (panorex) will be taken to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted, if there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult it will be to have them removed.

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract for adequate cleaning of the tooth.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to partially erupt. However, the tooth cannot function properly in the chewing process, and creates cleaning problems, among others.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: There is NO space for the tooth to erupt. It remains embedded in the jaw bone or if even partially visible requires complex surgical techniques for removal. The impacted wisdom tooth may also be in an unusual position and difficult to remove. This situation can also arise when the shape or size of the jaw bone and other facial structures make removal of this tooth significantly more complex.

Was first professional oral procedure and it could have not gone any better. Dr. Hummeldorf and his staff makes the process very easy and calming with their welcoming and playful attitude from the scheduling, to the waiting, and surgical procedure. Overall, my experience was super positive and would definitely recommend to anybody who needs a procedure done! And I think the marketing of Dr. Hummeldorf overall brand is the best I’ve seen in any oral surgeon, I know.

Patient Review By Fredrick Y

Dr. Hummeldorf literally saved my 16-year-old daughter Ashley’s life! When Ashley went in to get her wisdom teeth removed in Feb 2021, Dr. Hummeldorf spotted a small bump on her upper right back palate that was not there during the initial consult 3 weeks earlier. Dr. Hummeldorf performed a biopsy and also did a CT scan on his own and discovered an abnormal area between Ashley’s palate and sinus area. Unfortunately, it turned out to be salivary gland cancer, and we got Ashley in for surgery ASAP at UCSD to remove the affected area. Ashley is recovering ok now and her prognosis is good. If Dr. Hummeldorf had not spotted and acted on Ashley’s abnormality, she would still have a cancerous oral tumor continuing to grow. Thank you Dr. Hummeldorf!

Patient Review By Winnie B

Dr. Hummeldorf and his staff were very helpful and eased my nerves prior to the procedure. The office staff made it very easy to schedule appointments/follow ups and were upfront about the total cost of the surgery. They also worked with my insurance to make sure everything was covered beforehand. The surgery itself was very quick and went well (I had all four wisdom teeth removed). I had no problems during recovery. Would definitely recommend.
